Foreign Words

Foreign WordsAs a rule to good writing, avoid using Foreign Words. If you need to use a foreign word for expression, make sure you do not use the word carelessly and incorrectly.

Many foreign words, principally French and Latin, have weaseled their way into English expressions because they are necessary to make ideas clear. Some of them have been adopted and now pass for "permissible words of expression"; others are on their way to naturalization.

Of the first, these are examples: alias, alibi, caft, chic, cuisine, data, décolleté, depot, elite, entrée, modiste, négligé, sine qua non.

Of the second, these: dishabille, distingue, Han, faux pas, Fin de siècle, recherché, savoir-faire.
