MOST, ALMOST

Most denotes "the greatest number, quantity, or degree." It is always superlative and never means "nearly," which is the proper meaning of almost. We say, "Most of the boys are here; the time has almost come."

MORE EXAMPLES:

Almost, most. Almost means nearly. Most is properly used to mean (1) in the highest degree or to the greatest extent and (2) the greater portion or number; as, "Most of the passengers drowned." Most used for almost ("I was almost asleep when he came").
